What Portland pay means for a clinical lab technologist req

Portland's median for clinical lab technologists is $83,010. The lower quarter, $62,580, is the national median in disguise.

ReqRadius card on clinical lab technologist pay in Portland

Portland comp stopped the review once the lab offer cleared the national median. That number is the bottom of this market, not the middle of it.

Clinical lab technologists in Portland earn a median of $83,010. The national median is $62,930. The local lower quarter is $62,580, which is the country, essentially, wearing a Portland zip code. The upper quarter is $102,150. Clearing $62,930 doesn't make the offer local. It makes the offer the floor.

The bench is thin. OEWS counts 1,540 people in the occupation, and Portland has about a third fewer of them than a typical metro. You don't have a deep surplus that will take a nationally "strong" wage while they wait for something better. The people you want can see the difference between the floor and $83,010 without your slide.

This is bench work: running the tests, holding the instrument, releasing the result. Say which of those you need. A generalist at the median and a specialist near $102,150 are different reqs, and the thin share means you will feel the difference fast.

Boston will not bail out the template

Boston pays a median of $79,480, with 8,710 clinical lab technologists and a much deeper local share. High pay shows up there too. The pool does not. A posting that works in a deep market, with a long list of instruments the candidate must already know, becomes a wall in Portland. The wages looking "both above the country" is how the copy survives the meeting. Pay isn't the pool.

Keep Boston as a second line so nobody pretends Portland invented high lab pay. Don't paste Boston's screen onto 1,540 people.

Read the instrument list the way you read the wage. Every line you will not teach belongs to the upper quarter. Every line you will teach belongs in a sentence under the requirements, not in the requirements. Portland's thin share makes that edit urgent. You will not meet a crowd of people who already match a borrowed screen and a floor wage.

What Portland pay should change

Circle one of three figures before the req is allowed to post. The lower quarter, if you are truly hiring at the floor and the work matches a new grad you will train. The median, if you want a working technologist. The upper quarter, if the instrument list is real and you will not teach it. Then delete every requirement that belongs to a circle you didn't pick.

A sign-on on top of the national median still prices the floor. Use a bonus after the base is a Portland number, and only to move a start date.

Give a finalist a date. Thin markets don't hold a yes out of loyalty while finance takes another lap.

Illustrative story

The posted range had been nudged just past the national median, and the committee felt done. The screen still asked for two instruments the lab was willing to teach and one it wasn't. Applicants who could pass the whole list were people already earning toward the upper quarter. They declined. Applicants who liked the wage couldn't pass the list.

The debrief said Portland had no technologists. The count said otherwise, and the share said the city was thin, not empty. They cut the screen to the instrument they wouldn't teach, moved the base to the median, and put a decision date on the next finalist. The pool didn't double. The offer finally described a job a local technologist could recognize.

Decide whether Portland is a training search or an experienced one, and price that decision.
