Older residents and healthcare jobs in Alaska
In Alaska the thin bench beside older residents is nursing assistants, not aides.
A staffing plan assumed aides would be the scarce row because that is how another state looked.
Alaska has 116,192 residents age 65 and over.
Registered nurses number 7,510, which is 64.63 jobs for every 1,000 of those residents.
There are 6,530 aides doing home health and personal care, or 56.20 on that measure.
Those two benches are in the same neighborhood.
Assistant jobs total 2,060, or 17.73 on that measure.
If the req is assistants, the aide count is the wrong comfort.
This is employment next to a resident count.
It is not a shortage rate and it is not a stack of applications.

Takeaways
- The all-age civilian population in this file is 715,760. Swapping it in as the denominator changes the story.
- Alaska is 5 of 51 on the nurse measure. Assistants are not the sort key, and they are the small bench.
- Both files are 2025 government counts, and neither one is a list of applicants waiting on a req.
- Quote 17.73 when someone asks whether long-term care can be staffed from a deep assistant pool.
For recruiters
- Lead with assistants when assistants are the open job.
- Call the figure a density. The shortage word is a claim this table does not make.
FAQ

Methodology
Jobs are OEWS May 2025 state employment for registered nurses, nursing assistants, and home health and personal care aides. Residents are the Census Population Estimates Program civilian population age 65 and over on July 1, 2025, Vintage 2025. This is not the ACS tabulation; the ACS API was not used. Jobs per 1,000 residents equals jobs times 1,000 divided by that resident count. It is not a shortage rate and it is not a count of job listings. Areas are ordered by registered-nurse jobs per 1,000 residents age 65 and over. Alaska is 5 of 51. Total civilian population in the same file is 715,760.
