Older residents and healthcare jobs in Minnesota
Minnesota's aide count beside older residents is large. Nursing assistants are the small bench.
A shortage slide used the aide density as proof the state had run out of caregivers of every kind.
Minnesota has 1,113,573 residents age 65 and over.
There are 128,680 aides doing home health and personal care, which is 115.56 jobs per 1,000 older residents.
Read it as a dense aide workforce next to the older population.
The figure is not a count of open reqs.
Registered nurses number 70,110, or 62.96 on that measure.
Assistant jobs total 29,120, or 26.15.
If long-term care is hiring assistants, the aide density is the wrong comfort.
The assistant bench is the thin one.

Takeaways
- The all-age civilian population in this file is 5,829,774, and using it as the denominator will dilute every row on the page.
- Minnesota is 6 of 51 on the nurse measure, even though the aide count is the one that leads the page.
- The job figures are May 2025 and the residents are the civilian population on July 1, 2025, and neither file is a stack of applicants.
- Say density when you brief 115.56, because shortage is a different claim and this table cannot finish that sentence.
For recruiters
- Lead with the assistant figure when assistants are the people you are actually trying to hire.
- Keep the older-resident count on the slide so the aide headcount cannot travel without its denominator.
FAQ
- Are these posted wages or open jobs?

Methodology
Jobs are OEWS May 2025 state employment for registered nurses, nursing assistants, and home health and personal care aides. Residents are the Census Population Estimates Program civilian population age 65 and over on July 1, 2025, Vintage 2025. This is not the ACS tabulation; the ACS API was not used. Jobs per 1,000 residents equals jobs times 1,000 divided by that resident count. It is not a shortage rate and it is not a count of job listings. Areas are ordered by registered-nurse jobs per 1,000 residents age 65 and over. Minnesota is 6 of 51. Total civilian population in the same file is 5,829,774.
