Older residents and healthcare jobs in North Dakota
North Dakota's three caregiving benches sit closer together than a shortage slide will admit.
The briefing picked the top row and called the other two occupations too small to plan around.
North Dakota has 143,139 residents age 65 and over.
Registered nurses number 11,340, which is 79.22 jobs for every 1,000 of those residents.
That is the sort key.
It is a density, not a vacancy count.
Home health and personal care aides number 7,730, or 54.00 on that measure.
Nursing assistants number 6,840, or 47.79.
Aides and assistants are in the same range as each other.
Dropping either one as a footnote will surprise you when that req is the one still open.

Takeaways
- The all-age civilian population in this file is 792,230, and using it as the denominator will dilute every figure on the page.
- North Dakota is 3 of 51 on the nurse measure, so the rank will not tell you whether aides are thick or thin.
- These are May 2025 job counts beside a July 1, 2025 resident count, and neither file is a stack of applications.
- Use the assistant figure when the req is assistants, because it is not a small leftover under the aide count.
For recruiters
- Put all three per-resident figures on the slide, or label which license you left off and why.
- Say density when you say the number, because shortage is a different claim and this table cannot make it.
FAQ
- Are these posted wages or open jobs?
- No. The table is a government survey or a designation file.
- What should a recruiter do first?
- Follow the recruiter note on this page.

Methodology
Jobs are OEWS May 2025 state employment for registered nurses, nursing assistants, and home health and personal care aides. Residents are the Census Population Estimates Program civilian population age 65 and over on July 1, 2025, Vintage 2025. This is not the ACS tabulation; the ACS API was not used. Jobs per 1,000 residents equals jobs times 1,000 divided by that resident count. It is not a shortage rate and it is not a count of job listings. Areas are ordered by registered-nurse jobs per 1,000 residents age 65 and over. North Dakota is 3 of 51. Total civilian population in the same file is 792,230.
