Health professional shortage designations in Maine
Maine care IDs mark designated areas, not jobs Maine clinics have already posted publicly.
Maine care counts are designations, and Maine leads won't brief them as Maine requisitions.
Maine primary care carries 82 designated IDs, which Maine puts at 5.8 for every 100,000 residents.
Maine mental health is smaller at 69 IDs, and Maine's civilian population is 1,414,231.

Takeaways
- Maine dental health holds 78 designated IDs, and Maine should match it only to dental roles.
- Maine totals 229 distinct IDs across disciplines, which Maine should not pour into an offer.
- Maine's combined rate is 16.2 here, and Maine should quote that rate beside population.
- Maine mental health also shows 4.9 there, so Maine should leave the smaller row in.
For recruiters
- Maine recruiters should cite care designations before Maine dental health or mental health.
- Maine briefs should call each Maine ID a designation, never a posted Maine vacancy.
- Send the Maine wage in the Hiring Pack.

Methodology
Counts are distinct HPSA IDs with status Designated in the HRSA primary-care, dental, and mental-health detail files, last modified 2026-09-30. Component rows that repeat an ID are counted once. Withdrawn and proposed rows are excluded. Population is not summed from the HPSA file, because shortage areas overlap. The per-resident count uses Census civilian population on July 1, 2025, which is 1,414,231 in Maine, divided into the ID count per 100,000 residents. Rural-status fields are not added in this table, because one ID can carry more than one rural status. Maine has 229 distinct designated IDs across the three disciplines, which is 16.2 per 100,000 civilian residents. Areas are ordered by that per-resident count. Maine is 7 of 51.
