Health professional shortage designations in North Dakota
North Dakota's three designation files are within a handful of IDs. Ranking a winner is the mistake.
The slide put primary care first and let the other two disciplines look like leftovers.
Primary care has 74 designated IDs, 9.3 per 100,000 residents.
Dental health has 69, or 8.7 per 100,000.
Mental health has 68, or 8.6 per 100,000.
The files were last modified 2026-09-30.
A one-discipline plan is a choice.
The counts do not force it.
Together they are 211 distinct IDs, 26.6 per 100,000 civilian residents.
The civilian population here is 792,230.
Areas overlap, so do not add population from the designation file.
An ID is not an open job.

Takeaways
- North Dakota is 4 of 51 when areas are ordered by designations per resident.
- Withdrawn and proposed rows are out, and a repeated component of one ID counts once.
- Rural labels are not split, because one ID can carry more than one.
- Do not brief 9.3 as a gap the other two disciplines somehow failed to match.
For recruiters
- If you fund one discipline, say out loud that the choice is a budget call and not a ranking the file handed you.
- Pair each ID count with its per-resident figure so 74 cannot be recited as 74 vacancies.
FAQ
- Are these posted wages or open jobs?
- No. The table is a government survey or a designation file.
- What should a recruiter do first?

Methodology
Counts are distinct HPSA IDs with status Designated in the HRSA primary-care, dental, and mental-health detail files, last modified 2026-09-30. Component rows that repeat an ID are counted once. Withdrawn and proposed rows are excluded. Population is not summed from the HPSA file, because shortage areas overlap. The per-resident count uses Census civilian population on July 1, 2025, which is 792,230 in North Dakota, divided into the ID count per 100,000 residents. Rural-status fields are not added in this table, because one ID can carry more than one rural status. North Dakota has 211 distinct designated IDs across the three disciplines, which is 26.6 per 100,000 civilian residents. Areas are ordered by that per-resident count. North Dakota is 4 of 51.
