Health professional shortage designations in West Virginia
West Virginia dental and mental-health designations are the same count. Primary care is only a step higher.
The briefing ranked three winners. Two of the files are tied.
Dental health and mental health each have 119 designated IDs, 6.7 per 100,000 residents.
Primary care has 123, or 7.0 per 100,000.
HRSA last touched the files on 2026-09-30.
You can fund one discipline.
You cannot claim the counts picked a runaway leader.
Across the three files there are 361 distinct IDs, 20.4 per 100,000 civilian residents.
The civilian population is 1,765,970.
Because the areas overlap, leave the designation-file population alone.
An ID is not a vacancy.

Takeaways
- On designations per resident, West Virginia ranks 5 of 51, which is a rank of rates and not a rank of pain.
- Withdrawn and proposed rows are excluded, and repeated pieces of one ID are counted a single time.
- Rural status stays off this table, because a single ID may hold several rural labels and the split would double-count.
- Do not brief 7.0 as a different problem from 6.7, because the gap between those rates is four IDs.
For recruiters
- If dental and mental health are both open, give them the same weight unless a reason from outside this page says otherwise.
- Say designation when you cite the ID count, because the vacancy word is not what this file is counting.
FAQ
- Are these posted wages or open jobs?
- No. The table is a government survey or a designation file.
- What should a recruiter do first?
- Follow the recruiter note on this page.

Methodology
Counts are distinct HPSA IDs with status Designated in the HRSA primary-care, dental, and mental-health detail files, last modified 2026-09-30. Component rows that repeat an ID are counted once. Withdrawn and proposed rows are excluded. Population is not summed from the HPSA file, because shortage areas overlap. The per-resident count uses Census civilian population on July 1, 2025, which is 1,765,970 in West Virginia, divided into the ID count per 100,000 residents. Rural-status fields are not added in this table, because one ID can carry more than one rural status. West Virginia has 361 distinct designated IDs across the three disciplines, which is 20.4 per 100,000 civilian residents. Areas are ordered by that per-resident count. West Virginia is 5 of 51.
