Health professional shortage designations in Wyoming

Wyoming primary care is the designation file that is actually larger. Dental and mental health are the smaller pair.

Three disciplines were given one sentence, the way a tie state would deserve. Wyoming is not a tie.

Primary care has 43 designated IDs, 7.3 per 100,000 residents.

Dental health has 28, or 4.8 per 100,000.

Mental health has 26, or 4.4 per 100,000.

HRSA last touched the files on 2026-09-30.

Primary care is the larger file.

The other two are close to each other and smaller.

Together the files hold 97 distinct IDs, 16.5 per 100,000 civilian residents.

The civilian population is 586,280.

Do not add population from the designation file, because the areas overlap.

An ID remains a designation, not a job you failed to fill.

Takeaways

  • On designations per resident, Wyoming ranks 6 of 51, a rank of rates rather than a rank of urgency.
  • Withdrawn and proposed rows are out, and separate pieces of the same ID are counted once.
  • Rural labels are omitted, because a single ID may hold several rural labels and the table would double-count.
  • A per-resident figure at this level reflects a small population as well as the ID count, so say both when you brief it.

For recruiters

  • If the plan only has room for one discipline, primary care is the larger file, and you should say you are choosing it.
  • Do not add the three ID counts and describe that sum as a headcount of missing clinicians.

Methodology

Counts are distinct HPSA IDs with status Designated in the HRSA primary-care, dental, and mental-health detail files, last modified 2026-09-30. Component rows that repeat an ID are counted once. Withdrawn and proposed rows are excluded. Population is not summed from the HPSA file, because shortage areas overlap. The per-resident count uses Census civilian population on July 1, 2025, which is 586,280 in Wyoming, divided into the ID count per 100,000 residents. Rural-status fields are not added in this table, because one ID can carry more than one rural status. Wyoming has 97 distinct designated IDs across the three disciplines, which is 16.5 per 100,000 civilian residents. Areas are ordered by that per-resident count. Wyoming is 6 of 51.
