Cardiovascular Technologist jobs by city

Cardiovascular technologists run the tests and procedures that show how a heart and its vessels are working. Some work in the cath lab beside the cardiologist. Others run echo, vascular studies, stress tests, or rhythm monitoring.

Hospitals employ most of them, with cardiology practices and outpatient imaging centers behind. The cath lab specialty is the hardest to replace, because a lab cannot run a case without its full team.

The work

A cath lab day starts with a room set up for a case that may move up the schedule. You scrub, monitor, or record, and you may be on call for a heart attack at night.

Noninvasive work is steadier. You run an echo or a vascular study, capture clean images, and hand the reader a study that answers the order. A stress test adds a patient who needs coaching and watching at the same time.

License and training

Most states do not license this work directly. Employers usually ask for a credential from Cardiovascular Credentialing International, such as RCIS or RCS, or from ARDMS for echo. A few states license imaging or sonography staff, so confirm the rule in your state before you hire or start.

Questions

Is a cardiovascular technologist the same as a sonographer?

Not always. Echo technologists are cardiac sonographers. Cath lab and rhythm staff do different work under the same BLS title, so read the posting for the lab.

Do cardiovascular technologists take call?

In a cath lab, staff often take call, because heart attacks do not keep office hours. Echo and vascular roles usually run on a set schedule.
