Hospitals employ most of them. Physician groups, registry vendors, and public health agencies hire the rest. Much of the work can be remote, which widens the competition for each hire.

The work

You review records, fix gaps, and keep data flowing to the systems and registries that need it. Registrars must abstract each case to a strict standard and a deadline.

Some of the day is audits and questions from clinicians. You also protect privacy, so access requests and release rules are part of the job.

License and training

States do not license this work. Employers usually want an AHIMA credential such as RHIT or RHIA, and cancer registries usually want the CTR from NCRA. Read the posting for the credential the registry requires.

Questions

What is a CTR?

Certified Tumor Registrar, the NCRA credential most cancer registries want.

Can this work be remote?

Often. Many registry and records roles are remote or hybrid, so local employers compete with distant ones.
