Hiring difficulty and demand
Who's hiring
Las Cruces is outside the provider extract, so employer names are not listed.
License and training
BLS says a state may require training, a license, or a certificate. Employers often still want PBT(ASCP), RPT(AMT), or a National Healthcareer Association CPT when the statute is quiet. A state rule appears below only where a statute or board page was read. If your state is missing, confirm the rule before you treat a certificate as optional or as a license.

The work
You confirm the name and the date of birth before the needle comes out. Then you draw, label at the side of the patient, and get the tube to the bench or the courier while the order still matches. A mislabeled tube is not a small mistake. It is the wrong result on the wrong person.
Some of the day is urine cups, swab instructions, and the paperwork that keeps a specimen from sitting past its time. Donor work adds a longer interview and a person who can leave. Outpatient labs add a queue and a child who needs a different voice than the adult in the next chair.
Hospital shifts can be nights and weekends because the emergency department does not pause. You are on your feet. You are also the only lab worker some patients ever see, so the explanation is part of the draw.

Do I need a state certificate to draw blood in New Mexico?
Read the New Mexico section on this page. California, Louisiana, Nevada, and Washington are the states where we found a required credential. Florida excludes phlebotomists from the clinical laboratory personnel license, and New York says they are not licensed. If New Mexico is not one of those, confirm it locally before you start in Las Cruces.
What should a small lab in Las Cruces require?
Require the state credential if New Mexico has one, a clean labeling habit, and enough sticks that you are not their first vein. National openings are about 18.0 thousand a year and projected growth is 6.8%, which describes the country. Las Cruces is the wage table and roughly a fifth fewer of these workers than a typical metro, not that national line.
