Registered Nurse jobs by city

The stack that answers a registered nurse posting mixes new graduates with people who have already run a night shift. An RN license means an approved program and the NCLEX-RN. It does not say whether this person has worked a clinic day or a hospital night.

The stack that answers a registered nurse posting mixes new graduates with people who have already run a night shift. An RN license means an approved program and the NCLEX-RN. It does not say whether this person has worked a clinic day or a hospital night.

Hospitals still do most of the hiring. Clinics, home health agencies, and nursing homes hire registered nurses too, and a single site is competing with the hospital schedule even when the job is days. The work is assessment, medication, teaching, and a note that matches what happened.

The credential fight usually stalls on the degree. An associate degree can still produce a license, and some hospitals want a bachelor's on top of it. New York adds a clock for nurses who are not exempt. Read the state line before you treat a compact license as permission to start tomorrow.

The work

A hospital shift starts with report and a list that is not yesterday's list. You assess, give medications, watch the monitor, and call when the story changes. The chart has to say what you saw.

Clinic work runs on appointments instead of a unit. You room people, give the injections the protocol allows, teach the discharge, and still catch the person who looks worse than the visit type. Home health is one house, then the car, then the next house.

In a lot of settings the license also means you are the one who can delegate. If the task is outside what this state lets you hand to an aide, it is still your license on the note. Charge and precepting show up after the basics are boring and reliable.

License and training

Every state and the District of Columbia license registered nurses. The usual path is an approved nursing program and the NCLEX-RN, and a multistate license works only where the Nurse Licensure Compact is actually implemented. A nurse who moves from one compact state to another has 60 days to apply in the new home state. The state lines on this page come from the NLC map and the 2024 NCSBN licensure survey, which published hour groups rather than a single exact total. Check the board before you treat either source as the last word.

Alaska

A compact license stops at the Alaska border, because this state never joined. Renewal hours reported to NCSBN in 2024 also sat between 21 and 30, which you confirm on the board's own form.

Alabama

Multistate practice opened in Alabama on January 1, 2020, later than the enhanced compact's first wave. Asked about renewal hours in 2024, the board's answer sat between 21 and 30.

Arkansas

The enhanced compact covered Arkansas on January 19, 2018. Renewal, in the 2024 responses, was an 11-to-20-hour expectation, and those hours were supposed to match the nurse's own practice.

Arizona

Residents of Arizona could hold a multistate license once the enhanced compact started on January 19, 2018. NCSBN did not record an hour total here. The board instead described practice hours and a competency assessment.

California

Registered nurses in California answer to their own board, separate from vocational nurses, and the state is outside the compact. The 2024 hour responses for that RN board fell between 21 and 30.

Colorado

Colorado's multistate licenses date from the enhanced compact's January 19, 2018 start. On continued competency, the 2024 response was that renewal did not carry that kind of rule.

Connecticut

Connecticut's compact start date is October 1, 2025, so multistate practice is new. The hour response collected before that date was under 10, and the board can still change the renewal form.

District of Columbia

A Maryland or Virginia multistate license does not work in the District of Columbia, which is outside the compact. Renewal responses listed HIV/AIDS and practice-area hours, inside a 21-to-30 range.

Delaware

Delaware's multistate privilege dates to January 19, 2018. Child abuse was a named renewal topic, and the hour response that year fell between 21 and 30.

Florida

Florida's multistate privilege dates to January 19, 2018. Domestic violence and nursing law were both named renewal topics, inside a reported range of 21 to 30 hours.

Georgia

Georgia opened multistate licensing with its neighbors on January 19, 2018. A periodic refresher was one accepted route, and reported renewal hours fell between 21 and 30.

Hawaii

Flying in does not carry a mainland multistate license into Hawaii, which stayed out of the compact. The board listed the NCLEX itself as one renewal method, with reported hours between 21 and 30.

Iowa

Iowa was the only board whose 2024 RN response landed above 30 hours, and child abuse was one of the named topics. Multistate practice there dates to January 19, 2018.

Idaho

Idaho residents have had a path to a multistate license since January 19, 2018. No hour group was published for Idaho in that survey, so a Utah or Washington total does not belong on an Idaho renewal.

Illinois

A nurse who lives in Iowa or Wisconsin still needs an Illinois license, because Illinois stayed out. The hour response was 11 to 20, and no single subject was named.

Indiana

Indiana's implementation date is July 1, 2020, a second-wave start rather than the 2018 group. No hour group was published for this board, so the renewal total has to come from Indiana.

Kansas

Kansas started multistate licensing on July 1, 2019. The hour response was a 21-to-30 range, which is a bracket, not one number you can print on a poster.

Kentucky

Kentucky began multistate licensing on January 19, 2018. Child abuse and domestic violence were both named renewal topics, and reported hours fell between 11 and 20.

Louisiana

Louisiana's RN board is separate from its practical-nurse board, and multistate licensing began July 1, 2019. A refresher course was one listed route, with hours reported between 21 and 30.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts enacted the compact and the map still says implementation is unfinished, so you cannot get a multistate license from this board yet. Domestic violence was a named topic, and the hour response was 11 to 20.

Maryland

Maryland's multistate privilege dates to January 19, 2018. The hour response was the under-10 bracket, the bottom of the table NCSBN published.

Maine

Maine's multistate privilege dates to January 19, 2018. No hour bracket was published for this board, which means the renewal page in Maine is the figure, not a borrowed New England number.

Michigan

Ohio and Indiana implemented the compact, and Michigan did not, so those licenses stop at the border. Pain management was a required renewal topic, with reported hours between 21 and 30.

Minnesota

A Wisconsin or Iowa multistate license does not staff a Minnesota shift, because Minnesota stayed out. The hour response for renewal was 21 to 30.

Missouri

Missouri opened multistate licensing with the enhanced compact on January 19, 2018. No hour total was published for this board, which is a hole you fill on Missouri's site before you counsel a traveler.

Mississippi

Mississippi's multistate privilege dates to January 19, 2018. A refresher course was an accepted route, and the hour response sat in the 11-to-20 bracket.

Montana

Montana's multistate privilege dates to January 19, 2018. The continued-competency answer from this board was that renewal did not include that requirement, which is a different answer from the hour brackets.

North Carolina

Multistate licenses have been issued in North Carolina since January 19, 2018. A refresher course was accepted, no single subject was mandated, and reported hours were 21 to 30.

North Dakota

North Dakota began multistate licensing on January 19, 2018, and reported renewal hours fell between 11 and 20. Graduates eligible to test within 60 days of the degree can receive a 90-day work authorization, and it does not renew.

Nebraska

Nebraska began multistate licensing on January 19, 2018. A refresher course counted as one renewal route, with reported hours between 11 and 20.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire began multistate licensing on January 19, 2018. A refresher course was among the renewal routes, and the reported hours were 21 to 30.

New Jersey

New Jersey's implementation date is November 15, 2021. No hour bracket was published, so a New York or Pennsylvania total is the wrong note to hand a New Jersey nurse.

New Mexico

New Mexico's multistate privilege dates to January 19, 2018. The hour response was 21 to 30, and a refresher course was not among the methods this board listed.

Nevada

Neither a California license nor an Arizona multistate license lets you work in Nevada, which stayed out of the compact. A refresher course and the NCLEX were both listed methods, with reported hours between 21 and 30.

New York

New York stayed out of the compact. Nurses licensed on or after June 18, 2020 who are not exempt need a bachelor's or higher nursing degree within ten years to keep registering, with the first of those renewals on or after June 18, 2030. Ordinary renewal drew no continued-competency hour rule in the 2024 responses.

Ohio

Ohio's implementation date is January 1, 2023, later than the states on its southern border. Nursing law and rules were required, and the board's hour answer was 21 to 30.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma began issuing multistate licenses on January 19, 2018. A refresher course and the NCLEX both counted, and renewal hours were reported from 21 through 30.

Oregon

A Washington multistate license does not cross into Oregon, which stayed out of the compact. What the board reported was paid and unpaid practice hours, not an hour bracket.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's full implementation date is July 7, 2025. Child abuse was a required topic, and the hour response collected before that start was 21 to 30.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island implemented the compact on January 8, 2024. The hours had to sit in the nurse's area of practice, and what the board reported was between 11 and 20.

South Carolina

Multistate licenses have been issued in South Carolina since January 19, 2018. The board listed a refresher course and the NCLEX, and it reported 21 to 30 renewal hours.

South Dakota

South Dakota opened multistate licensing on January 19, 2018. The board described practice hours and did not publish an hour total you could copy onto a renewal.

Tennessee

Tennessee's multistate privilege dates to January 19, 2018. The hour response was under 10, and the board also listed the NCLEX and a refresher course.

Texas

Texas began multistate licensing on January 19, 2018. Nursing law and practice-area hours were both required, and the board's hour answer was 11 to 20.

Utah

Utah's multistate privilege dates to January 19, 2018. The hours were supposed to match the work the nurse actually does, and the reported range was 21 to 30.

Virginia

Virginia began multistate licensing on January 19, 2018. A refresher course counted, the board named no single required subject, and reported hours were 21 to 30.

Vermont

Vermont implemented the compact on February 1, 2022, while much of New England was still outside or unfinished. The board's hour answer for renewal was 11 to 20.

Washington

Washington implemented the compact on January 31, 2024, well after Oregon next door stayed out. A refresher course was one listed route, and reported renewal hours were under 10.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin's multistate privilege dates to January 19, 2018. This board did not report a continued-competency rule, which is a different answer from the brackets published for Illinois and for Iowa.

West Virginia

West Virginia keeps a separate board for registered nurses, apart from practical nurses, and multistate practice dates to January 19, 2018. Reported renewal hours for RNs fell between 11 and 20.

Wyoming

Wyoming's multistate privilege dates to January 19, 2018. The hour response was under 10, with a refresher course and the NCLEX also on the list of methods.

Questions

What does an RN license actually prove?

It proves an approved nursing program and a passing NCLEX-RN, plus whatever else that state adds at renewal. It does not prove a bachelor's degree, a specialty certificate, or time in your setting. Employers ask for those on top when the unit needs them.

Can you still get hired with an associate degree?

Yes in a lot of places. The license can come from an associate degree, a bachelor's, or a hospital diploma program. Some hospitals prefer the bachelor's for bedside jobs and expect it for charge or education roles. New York is the state with a timed degree rule for nurses who are not exempt, and that rule is on the state line.

Where does the job go after the first staff role?

Most people start as staff nurses, then move toward charge, a specialty unit, teaching, or management. Management jobs increasingly want a graduate degree. Nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist, and clinical nurse specialist are later licenses with their own degrees, not a reward for staying on the unit.

Does a multistate license work in every state?

No. It works in compact states that have finished implementation, and only when your home state is the one that issued it. Massachusetts has enacted the compact and has not finished implementation. Alaska, California, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, and Oregon are outside it. Moving to a new compact home state starts a 60-day clock.
