Respiratory therapists care for patients who cannot breathe well on their own. They run ventilators, give breathing treatments, and respond to codes.

Hospitals employ most of them, and home medical equipment companies and nursing homes hire the rest. An ICU that is short on therapists may have to limit how many ventilated patients it takes.

The work

You see your assigned patients, check each ventilator, give treatments, and adjust settings with the physician and the nurse. Codes and rapid responses can interrupt that plan at any hour.

Night shifts are common in hospital work, and weekends rotate. You also teach patients and families how to use oxygen and other equipment at home.

License and training

Every state except Alaska licenses respiratory therapists. Most employers want the NBRC's CRT or RRT credential. Confirm your state board's rules before you hire or start.

Questions

What is the difference between CRT and RRT?

Both are NBRC credentials. RRT is the advanced level, and many hospitals require it for critical care.

Do respiratory therapists need a license?
