Hire a Phlebotomist by city

You need someone who can open a draw station, not a technologist who runs the analyzer. Ask about unaided venipunctures, a queue versus a hospital round, and the state credential in California, Louisiana, Nevada, or Washington.

The name, the time, and the tube type should be finished before the patient leaves the chair. A fast draw with a sloppy label is the expensive kind of fast, and a national certificate still does not replace the state rule.

A small lab that copies a national midpoint will lose a reliable phlebotomist to the hospital outpatient desk. Use this metro's median for someone you will still be coaching, and the 75th for someone who can open the draw station alone. Blank cells mean BLS did not publish that percentile here.

License and training

BLS says a state may require training, a license, or a certificate. Employers often still want PBT(ASCP), RPT(AMT), or a National Healthcareer Association CPT when the statute is quiet. A state rule appears below only where a statute or board page was read. If your state is missing, confirm the rule before you treat a certificate as optional or as a license.

California

California certifies phlebotomy technicians through the Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services. A Certified Phlebotomy Technician I applicant needs a department-approved training program and a passing score on a national exam the department accepts. The duty to certify sits in Business and Professions Code section 1246 and in Title 17, section 1030.

Florida

Florida licenses clinical laboratory personnel and then excludes phlebotomists from that definition. Section 483.803 says the term does not include phlebotomists, along with trainees and people doing clerical work. A Florida lab license is not the credential for the draw. Employers can still ask for a national certificate.

Louisiana

Louisiana says no one may perform the duties of a phlebotomist without a current certificate issued under the clinical laboratory personnel law, unless an exemption applies. The certificate runs on the calendar year. Applicants other than laboratory assistants have to pass an exam the board approves, and the State Board of Medical Examiners wants the score from the exam agency.

Nevada

Nevada does not give phlebotomists a free-standing scope. The Division of Public and Behavioral Health says a person drawing specimens must be certified as a laboratory assistant and must work for a laboratory the state licenses. NAC 652.4855 wants a high school diploma plus approved training, a certification from a named national body, or a long experience route.

New York

New York does not license phlebotomists. The Education Department says they may collect blood and receive urine samples, and they may not perform tests or procedures on those samples. A clinical laboratory technologist license is a different profession. Do not treat a phlebotomy certificate as that license, or that license as permission to skip the draw rules your lab already has.

Washington

Washington certifies a medical assistant-phlebotomist. RCW 18.360 says no one may practice under that title without the certification. The same chapter separately certifies a medical assistant-certified, who has a wider scope, and a medical assistant-registered, who the health department says cannot perform phlebotomy. Match the credential to the draw, not to the job ad's nickname.

Questions

How do you become a phlebotomist?

BLS says the usual door is a postsecondary certificate that takes less than a year, with anatomy, collection, and a clinical practice. Some employers still hire a high school graduate and train them. Either path has to teach labeling and tracking, because that is how specimens stay tied to the right person.

Which certificate should I sit for?

Employers commonly recognize PBT(ASCP), RPT(AMT), and the National Healthcareer Association CPT, and Nevada's laboratory-assistant rule names those bodies plus a few others. California wants an exam its department has approved, after a program approved in California. A certificate that travels well in one state can be the wrong paper in the next.

Is a phlebotomist the same as a lab technologist?

Phlebotomists collect and label, while clinical laboratory technologists and technicians run the tests, and several states license that testing separately. New York is explicit that a phlebotomist may not perform tests on the sample. If the posting says phlebotomist and the work is resulting tests, the title is the wrong one.

What comes after phlebotomy?

Some people stay in donor centers or outpatient labs and take the harder draws, and some use the specimen work to enter a laboratory technician program or a nursing program. Those paths issue new credentials. A phlebotomy certificate does not convert into either one.
